Welcome to my favorite time of the year, photographically speaking. The skies of October offer beautiful sunsets, and sunrises, and beautiful light in general. Combine the gorgeous light with the changing leaves, and the photographic opportunities abound!
Let’s go back to composition this month. A technique that we probably use without necessarily realizing it is diagonal lines. Leading lines are a great way to pull the viewer to the subject of the image, but diagonal lines will give the image some extra energy. Diagonal lines call us to follow them across the page, and smart use of them will call the viewer to look further into the scene.
I really like the tutorial I found here at Picture Correct. In addition to the helpful article, the photos show how varied the possibilities are in using the diagonal lines technique. As you read through it, think beyond the literal line, and see if you can consider connecting things in your scene that create a diagonal. If you tilt your camera, even a subject’s eyes can become a diagonal line.
We will look at more sample and possibilities during the lesson part of the meeting.
See you Thursday!
Judy
