Dear Sony,

I write this letter with a heavy heart, as I have decided to leave your DSLR camera gear behind and become a Nikon shooter. Your gear, and that of your predecessor, now-defunct Minolta, has served me well as I built by wedding and portrait photography business, but in the last six months, I have had to replace both a dedicated flash-the HVL-58AM-your flagship model-and now my Alpha 700 camera body has quit. It appears to be an issue with the shutter or the aperture motor, but I don’t have an easy way of knowing, because I can’t get a straight answer out of your support team. I can’t even click through to find an authorized repair center on your website.

I really have loved the image stabilization in the camera body. It has allowed me to capture many great shots on the fly that would have been lost with another camera. The colors have been crisp and the burst modes have been right on. But I just don’t have the time to chase repairs on gear that should have lasted much longer than it has. On top of this, every accessory requires a special adapter to work with your proprietary system. When I wanted to add pocket wizards to my kit, I had spend days searching for an adapter to connect the flash, and spend over $100 to buy an adapter for the hotshoe on the Alpha.

Quite frankly, I’m tired you jumping into my wallet, only to need a work-around to get your gear to work with the rest of the world.I expected so much more from the company entrusted with the great work from the minds of Minolta.

You have a great product that creates lovely images, but your customer service is inconsistent and your repair system is too difficult to navigate. So, this is goodbye, Sony. I will take my chances with Nikon, who frankly can give you a run for the money, now that you have cannibalized all that Minolta left you.
